Personalmente, mi sono commosso profondamente poco prima della prima sessione in cui John Piper avrebbe parlato. Infatti mentre camminavo dal mio albergo al Palacongressi ho visto una mail sul mio smartphone. E l’ho letta, prima di entrare a sentire quella prima sessione. Di cosa si trattava? Era una email circolare mandata (mi immagino) a migliaia di persone sulla mailing list di Desiring God. Quali erano i contenuti? Riporto in calce la lettera in inglese, ma il succo è che John Piper chiedeva alle persone che leggevano l’email a pregare per quelli che erano lì al convegno. Ed io, insieme ad altre 1.500 persone, ero lì a quel convegno e ho ringraziato il Signore che centinaia (migliaia?) di persone, in più parti del mondo, in quel momento pregavano per noi che stavamo lì a Montesilvano – che lo Spirito glorificasse il Padre innalzando il Figlio in mezzo a noi. La tempistica era inebriante. Che grande Dio abbiamo!

This morning he asked for specific prayer for his talks and interviews in Montesilvano, Italy, which you can read below. I am writing from Montesilvano, Italy, a small town on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. Poland and Geneva are behind us and three messages and two interviews and a TV interview are before us. Noel and I both have recovered from our colds. Thank you for praying.
I felt good about the three messages in Geneva and each time the translation back and forth seemed more natural. One small anecdote from the conference leader. A French pastor came with his resignation letter in his bag. After the message on Bartimaeus, which focused on the “worst kind of blindness” and the “best kind of seeing,” he said he was tearing up the letter and resolving to trust God to press on.
Here in Montesilvano there are about 1500 folks gathered. About 60% from Italy and the rest from the Balkan countries and elsewhere. This is remarkable from their standpoint because the largest conference they have had up till now has been about 400. This is an enormous responsibility and privilege. Ministry in these countries is so hard. The cultural obstacles are so much more tough than in America, and ours are hard enough. Please pray for breakthroughs and for a great movement—a great awakening and reformation in this dark land where Roman Catholicism has robbed people of the Bible and of true Gospel grace.
